If you are a fan of country music, you may be familiar with the country music duo Joey+Rory. Rory and Joey Feek are a wife and husband who have been married for 13 years. If you watch videos of them interacting or read their blog, you can easily pick up on their deep love and undying devotion to one another. Together, they broke into the country music scene in 2008 as a bluegrass/country duo.
In 2014, Joey gave birth to their first child together, a little girl named Indiana. Indiana was diagnosed with Down syndrome shortly after her birth. Later in 2014, Joey was diagnosed with unexpectedly cervical cancer. After receiving a complete hysterectomy, her cancer temporarily went away. Sadly, her cancer returned, this time in her sigmoid colon. After attempts to defeat the cancer with aggressive treatment, doctors discovered that Joey’s cancer was not improving. Rory and Joey asked family members, friends, and fans to pray for a miracle for Joey. Joey’s cancer worsened and her pain increased. The family received the news: there was nothing more that could be done for her. The decision to discontinue treatment only made sense.
With their deep faith and love as their guide, they decided it would be better for Joey to spend her remaining time at home with her family. This way, she would have the opportunity to create memories, savor precious moments together, enjoy one another’s presence, and ultimately, say goodbye. In recent days, 40-year-old Joey’s condition has deteriorated rapidly. Joey, Rory, and family believed they received an answer to their prayers. It may not have been the answer they were hoping for, but it was an answer and they were able to make peace with it.
Rory Feek shared the following touching photos on his blog of his wife spending time with their daughter in the hospital.
Rory captioned the photos with this statement: “Yesterday I sat her down in front of her mama and they smiled and played and loved each other the way that only mamas and their little ones can. Afterwards, when Indy got sleepy, Joey held her and sang “In The Garden” and other hymns as she softly stroked her silky-blonde hair. Perfect love filled that hospital room as we all held our breath and wiped our eyes.”
Though Joey’s story is heartbreaking, it is also brimming with love, inspiration, and unending faith. Our thoughts are with her and her family.
