What do you do, when you’re surrounded by rusty, old farm equipment and heaps of scrap metal? Lesser mortals would be seen carting it to the nearest recycle depot, but not John Lopez. No sir.
This rancher from Western South Dakota has a rare gift. The ability to see the inherent beauty in the abandoned, the unwanted, and to breathe new life into it. He transforms what is supposedly trash into breathtaking life-sized metal sculptures. Iconic creatures such as bison, plough horses, and Texas longhorn steers all come to life under his pain-staking care.
“My favorite part about these pieces is the texture. I just start grabbin’ stuff from the pile and welding it, in and if you weld enough of the same thing on over and over it creates this really cool texture that I’ve never seen in these kinds of pieces before. And I think that’s what draws people in.” – John Lopez
There is no such thing as ‘garbage’ in this world. As cheesy as it sounds, the saying “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” is oh so true. You can check out some of John Lopez’s amazing works of art below.
