A Fun DIY Project: How to Dip Dye a Shirt! – Chicks News

Directions:

First, boil a gallon of water. Put your disposable gloves on. While the water is boiling on the stove, pour your packet of fabric dye into your large glass bowl. Once the water is boiling, carefully pour it over the fabric dye in the bowl. Stir the dye with the water until the dye dissolves completely. Next, add the laundry detergent to the mixture and stir (if you are using Rit fabric dye, you should add 1 tablespoon of laundry detergent to the mix). Once the mixture is stirred, take your t-shirt (or other clothing item to be dyed) and run water over it up to the place you want the dye to reach. Typically, you want to go approximately half way up. Squeeze out the excess water. Now, quickly dip your shirt (or clothing item) up to the spot where you want the dye to reach. You must do this quickly because this will be your lightest color layer. Now, dip your second section and hold it in the dye for 20 to 30 seconds (depending how much darker you want the second color layer to be). Continue in the same manner (gradually increasing time in the dye) until you reach the bottom of your shirt. Be very careful not to touch the white part of your shirt with your gloves or you will stain it. Carefully squeeze excess dye into the bowl. Run each section of the dip dyed shirt under cool to slightly warm water. Carefully squeeze out excess water and hang your shirt or clothing item to dry. Voila! You have a unique, dip dyed shirt!
